Louisiana DanceSport

January 03, 2010

Louisiana DanceSport was organized in 2003 as a Louisiana non-profit corporation and has been granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. It was established in order to promote ballroom dancing and to provide opportunities for amateur competitors to participate in both amateur and pro-am competitions at a reasonable cost. It serves as the organizer of the two competitions, which together constitute the "Gumbo of Ballroom Weekend."

In partnership with the USA Dance Chapter 5031 and Saturday Night Ballroom, our board of directors is dedicated to the expansion of ballroom as a sport, as a hobby and as a means of socializing with friends. Our intention is to serve Louisiana from Shreveport to Lake Charles, Monroe to Slidell, and all points in between in order to bring together dancers who share a passion for ballroom dancing and to foster the education of young people in an activity that will last throughout their lives. Our vision is to eventually see ballroom practiced as a sport within our local schools.

Our first president was Maurice Doyle, who helped to launch the corporation and who provided much of the early vision and leadership. Following his untimely death, Ann Durocher stepped up to the role of president and has pulled together a tremendous team of talented individuals who all share these common goals.

Louisiana DanceSport organizes the USA Dance Gumbo DanceSport Championships for Chapter 5031 of USA DANCE and on the same weekend organizes its own Louisiana Challenge.

Mission Statement

January 04, 2010

In the spirit of fostering the development of dancesport and passing it down to another generation of dancers, we will uphold these principles:

  • To allow all amateur dancers, including those without amateur partners, to compete in the sport they love at an affordable price.
  • To promote to the general public both the social and competitive aspects of dancing.
  • To provide a quality and fun atmosphere in which all can participate, from the beginning dancer to the most advanced dancer, as well as the enthused spectator.
  • To showcase the various styles of dance, while maintaining the integrity of each dance by following the guidelines and requirements of each style.
  • To provide scholarships as a means to encourage dancers to continue to improve in their sport.
